Challenges Facing The Elderly Population - 1385 Words

In the next several years we in increase in the elderly population that will alter the way we care for our patients. According to Johansson, G., Eklund, K., Gosman-Hedstrà ¶m, G. (2010). â€Å"A greater amount of resources from health and community services is necessary as the number of elderly persons in the community increases†. As the elderly population increase so will the complexity of care that these individuals will require. Many of these patients are living with several illnesses that will require a high level of care and expertise of healthcare providers. In this paper I will discuss the challenges this patient populating faces and potential way we can improve the care we provide. Age Related Changes As we age our bodies undergo many changes that can impact our overall health and well-being. With aging skin become thinner and more susceptible injuries such as tearing and breakdown. The elderly population faces increase risk of injury related to falls, which can be related to overall strength or side effects of medications. Changes in ability to see and hearing occur as they begin to age. In addition we see alterations in their digestive system, which can cause in an increase risk of constipation and other issues. Each of these patients are dealing with age related changes in addition to managing several different disease processes.
